Description
The Dwarf Cavendish banana, also known as the Chinese banana, is a small banana plant that is cultivated for its fruits, e.g. on the Canary Islands, and is also a popular tropical ornamental plant. It belongs to the Cavendish cultivar group, which originated in South-East Asia and reached the tropical regions of Africa via Madagascar a long time ago. Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish' grows to around 1 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 metres wide, depending on its location. However, it takes time to reach its maximum height and it generally remains smaller and more compact in terrarium and room conditions. This makes it a suitable plant for tropical setups. This plant from the Musaceae family prefers warm temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and a high humidity of 60 to 90 %. Its pseudostem consists of densely packed leaf stalks and the plant forms large, long, green but short-stalked leaves. When young, new leaves have maroon to brown-purple blotches that later turn green. Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish' is ideal for terrariums where constant moisture and regular watering are ensured.
In larger terrariums, the Dwarf Cavendish banana can serve as an impressive vertical element. Its large leaves provide shelter and hiding spots for terrarium inhabitants. Under optimal conditions, Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish' can even develop its characteristic inflorescence, bearing both male and female flowers. The plant propagates through pups that grow at the base of the mother plant. The plant’s lush foliage creates a tropical atmosphere and contributes to the design of a natural ambience.
