Description
Neoregelia ampullacea 'Purpurea' is a stemless funnel bromeliad that reproduces by stolons. The naturally occurring form 'Purpurea' has reddish to purple banded or dotted leaf undersides. It offers a particularly interesting sight in the planted terrarium.
This plant is an epiphyte native to humid, tropical regions of south-east Brazil. The tongue-shaped linear-lanceolate leaves are evergreen and grow to about 1,5 cm width and 15 - 20 cm length. This attractive bromeliad is called N. ampullacea because of its ampullary rosette center. It forms a funnel which collects water. This funnel water should be replenished at regular intervals outside the flowering period (June - August), but should be changed every 3 to 4 weeks so that it does not become foul. Neoregelia ampullacea bears light purple tubular flowers deeply sunken into the rosette.
Unlike many other bromeliads, the mother rosette does not die immediately after flower and daughter plant formation. Without any intervention, the pups and mother thus grow together to form a pretty and voluminous clump. But the pups can also be carefully removed and separated when they are about a third of the size of the mother plant.
