Description
"Duffii" is a tropical fern that is as easy as it is graceful. Although it is traded as Nephrolepis cordifolia "Duffii", it is possibly a form of Nephrolepis hirsutula from Southeast Asia to Australia. This pigmy sword fern has much narrower fronds than Nephrolepis exaltata and grows about 30 cm high.
The "Duffii" sword fern grows in well-drained soil that should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. When it is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. The species is a semi-shade plant; a bright but not full sun spot is ideal. The temperature is best above 20 °C and should not drop below 14 °C. The fern can be propagated simply by dividing its many-headed rootstock, also by planting young plantlets at the ends of the runners.
Nephrolepis cordifolia "Duffii" is much more suitable for small terrariums than Nephrolepis exaltata, for rainforest as well as drier terrarium types. It works best with its overhanging fronds in an elevated position, for example on back walls, but also on the terrarium floor.
