Description
There are different selections of the Mondo grass, a relative of lily of the valley and dragon tree. 'Minor Variegata' is a dwarf form about 10 cm tall and differs from the pure dark green 'Kyoto Dwarf' in having leaves with white vertical stripes. The species Ophiopogon japonicus is native to shady, humid places in East Asia and is widely used as an ornamental plant, especially in warmer countries. The plant forms dense clumps or turfs of wiry, over-curved, 2-4 mm wide basal leaves, underground rhizomes and runners. Small nodding light purple flowers appear on short inflorescences, followed by black-blue spherical fruits.
Ophiopogon japonicus grows in pretty much any soil that is kept slightly moist. Temporary drought can be survived thanks to water-storing root tubers, while permanent waterlogging leads to rotting. The plant needs little light, but grows more vigorously in a bright position. The Japanese snake's beard is very temperature tolerant and even partially hardy in Central Europe, but overwinters more safely in frost-free conditions. It can also be kept warm all year round. The plant can be propagated by dividing older clumps and cutting off the underground runners.
Ophiopogon japonicus 'Minor Variegata' is a robust, hard-wearing and shade-tolerant terrarium plant. It is versatile and can also be used as a turf-like ground cover. Although the plant originates from subtropical to warm-temperate latitudes with cool winters, it grows not only in cool-temperate terrariums, but also in tropical rainforest terrariums. With its white stripes, the 'Minor Variegata' cultivar brightens up gloomy terrarium areas.
