Description

The Heart-leaved Peperomia is a creeping, climbing or hanging plant resembling the unrelated Philodendron hederaceum. It is widespread in tropical America, from Mexico and the Caribbean to eastern Brazil, and occurs as an epiphyte (on trees) or lithophyte (on rocks) in moist tropical forests. Its thick-fleshed leaves grow to about 5-7 cm long. The stems form roots on moist substrate. The wild type is pure green, the cultivar 'Variegata' has a creamy white zone along the leaf margin.

Peperomia serpens 'Variegata', usually labelled P. scandens 'Variegata' in the trade, grows well in a loose, humusy, slightly moist soil that should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. When the plant is well rooted, it can be supplied with a fertiliser for house plants. As an epiphyte or climbing plant, this dwarf pepper is a humus rooter and needs a support such as moss sticks or damp back walls to anchor itself with its roots. A bright, but not full sunny spot is preferred. About 18-25 °C is favourable, 15 °C should not be fallen short of for a longer period of time. The plant can be propagated by cuttings.

This Peperomia can be used in rainforest terrariums as a climbing or hanging epiphyte, for back walls or also as a creeping ground plant. With its white-coloured leaves it forms a bright accent.
