Description
This water knotweed was first introduced as Polygonum sp. 'Ruby' and later identified as Persicaria praetermissa ( = Polygonum praetermissum). This species is native to large areas of tropical Asia and Australia. It mainly colonises wet places and stream edges as a terrestrial or marsh plant, but can also grow under water.
This Persicaria has interesting-looking, narrow spear-shaped leaves and forms beautiful brown-red to brown-orange colours in its underwater form. Another special feature is its squarrose, diagonal to horizontal growth. The shoots are sparsely branched and grow to at least 35 cm long. The stem is relatively firm and wiry, light green to brownish, about 1.5 mm thick, with short, backward-facing bristles. The stem nodes are about 2 cm apart. The alternate, up to approx. 7.5 cm long leaves have an about 8 mm long petiole.
Persicaria praetermissa is not too difficult, but medium to strong lighting and a good supply of CO2 and nutrients are an advantage. The plant grows rather quickly and can be easily propagated by cuttings. Older, unsightly shoots with many water roots are best removed and replaced with new cuttings. After severe pruning, new growth is often sparse, so it is better to remove the old stumps and replace them with shoot tip cuttings.
With its striking, horizontal to ascending growth habit, special leaf shape and rather dark colouring, this tropical knotweed species works best as an accent plant in the aquarium midground, contrasting with fine-leaved, light green plants. Persicaria praetermissa is also interesting as an emersed plant for paludariums and Wabi-Kusa.
