Description

Persicaria sp. "Sao Paulo" is one of the most beautifully coloured aquarium plants of all. This aquatic knotweed from Brazil has not yet been identified to species, but we suspect that it belongs to Persicaria hydropiperoides, a wetland plant that is widespread from North to South America. Persicaria sp. "Sao Paulo" takes on an intense magenta colour when well lit and supplied with nutrients under water. The stem grows strictly upright. If left alone, the plant will eventually grow out of the water and flower.
In the terrestrial form (emersed), shoots of Persicaria sp. "Sao Paulo" tend to have dark to medium green leaves. Under water, however, the plant soon develops shoots with red-coloured leaves. The stems branch out at the nodes and can grow to at least 50 cm long. However, the plant looks better in the aquarium if it is not allowed to grow much taller than around 30 - 40 cm.
Aquatic plant nurseries often supply Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' under the name "Sao Paulo", but we offer the true, much more intensely coloured Persicaria sp. "Sao Paulo".

Like all Persicaria species, this plant has a relatively high requirement for macro and micronutrients, which it also absorbs from the substrate in the aquarium. The addition of CO2 is recommended. Rather strong lighting promotes the splendid colouring of this plant. It is best to plant stems individually in a group with some distance between them. Like other stem plants, Persicaria sp. "Sao Paulo" can be propagated by terminal and partial cuttings. Stems that have become very long tend to become bare (shed lower leaves) and form many water roots at the nodes. If they are cut back severely, the remaining stems often sprout poorly again. It is therefore best to replace shoots that have become too long with terminal cuttings.

Persicaria sp. "Sao Paulo" looks best as a free-standing group in the aquarium midground, where it attracts attention with its magenta tones and provides a strong contrast to light green plants. It can also be used as an emersed plant in open aquariums, paludariums and wabi-Kusa.

Persicaria (Polygonum) sp. 'Sao Paulo' is a phantastic new aquarium plant from Brazil. At the moment, the correct species name of this knotweed is still in the dark. When kept in the right conditions, this is probably the most intensively coloured plant species currently avaiable for aquaria. It is offered by the Japanese company Rayon Vert, and it is also available among hobbyists in the USA.
Unfortunately, under the name Polygonum sp. 'Sao Paulo' there is also another plant in trade, namely the very similar P. sp. 'Kawagoeanum', and it is even questionable if true 'Sao Paulo' is available in Europe at the moment.
Thus we will list some characteristics suitable for differentiating these rather similar knotweeds in the following.
