Description
"Mini Midget" is a small Philodendron that has not yet been determined to species and is ideal for terrariums. The plant is still a rarity. It was found in 2016 by operators of the Glass Box Tropicals shop in a nursery in Florida (USA). It is thought to have originated from Ecuador because similar small-leaved Philodendrons are found there. Philodendron sp. "Mini Midget" has lanceolate leaves with a 4 - 6 cm long, 1 - 2 cm wide blade and a 3 - 5 cm long petiole. The relatively slow-growing plant can branch out bushily and also forms long shoots. These can climb with adhesive roots and grow creeping or hanging without support. Aerial roots appear at the nodes, which develop into adhesive roots on hardscape in high humidity or into soil roots on moist substrate. This Philodendron can also grow as an epiphyte.
The young plants supplied in tissue culture (in Vitro) cups are free from pests such as aphids, thrips and spider mites.
Philodendron sp. "Mini Midget" does not have high requirements and is comparable in cultivation to other tropical climbing plants such as Philodendron hederaceum. A loose, moderately moist, but never waterlogged substrate and high humidity are recommended. The temperature should ideally be above 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for long periods. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed occasionally with a houseplant fertiliser. It will still grow in low light or shade, but will be stronger in a bright, not full sun position. In a moist environment, the roots attach themselves to the support, otherwise the shoots must be fixed where they are to climb. As already mentioned, this Philodendron can also be used as an epiphyte. It is tied together with a substrate such as epiphyte soil or sphagnum moss, which is kept slightly moist by occasional spraying. Propagation is by top and partial cuttings; stems lying on the ground root at the nodes.
This exquisite miniature Philodendron is distinguished from other climbing aroids by its narrow leaves. It can be used in a variety of ways, especially in rainforest terrariums. Rather compact and slow-growing, Philodendron sp. 'Mini Midget' is ideal for small containers. It looks particularly attractive when it forms thickets on vertical structures such as moist back walls.
