Description

The Golden polypody, Phlebodium aureum, is widely distributed in the American subtropics and tropics, from the southeastern United States to Argentina. It thrives both in moist, shady environments and as an epiphyte on trees. This fern is named for its gold-yellow to brown sporangia clusters (sori) on the underside of the leaf. The fronds, depending on age and size, have a varying number of lobes and emerge from a thick, creeping, conspicuously gold-brown scaled rhizome. The cultivar 'Blue Star' is characterised by its unique silver-blue fronds. The plant reaches a height of about 40-60 cm; the young plants we supply are usually around 20 cm tall and 30 cm wide.

Caring for Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' is straightforward. This fern prefers high humidity and should therefore be sprayed regularly. The temperature range is approximately 14 - 27 °C. The fern's need for light is not high, but it grows more luxuriantly in a bright spot, though without direct sunlight if it receives daylight. As an epiphyte, 'Blue Star' needs a little substrate such as epiphytic soil or moss. The soil should be kept slightly moist but not wet to prevent root rot. Occasional fertilisation promotes growth. Propagation is done by dividing the rhizomes.

In terrariums, 'Blue Star' is a versatile and attractive fern, distinguished by its unique silver-blue, wavy fronds. It can be used as a ground plant, for back walls, and as an epiphyte in the design of natural-looking, varied terrarium landscapes. The long, overhanging fronds provide natural hiding and climbing opportunities for terrarium inhabitants. As a mature plant, it is more suitable for large terrariums, but as an initially about 20 cm tall young plant, it is also well suited for smaller containers. In line with its origin, Phlebodium aureum is suitable for both subtropical humid forest terrariums with a cooler winter period and tropical rainforest terrariums.
