Description
Pinguicula calderoniae is a carnivorous plant native to the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí and Querétaro where it grows in moist, shady environments. The form 'Llano del Conejo' was found in the area of the same name in San Luis Potosí. This plant is known for its narrow leaves arranged in a rosette. The mature plant reaches a diameter of 5.5 cm or more. The colour varies from light green to pink, depending on the light intensity.
The plant prefers partial to full sunlight or artificial grow light and thrives best at temperatures between 22 °C and 29 °C. A humidity level between 50% and 70% is also ideal for this plant's growth.
The plant has no actual dormancy, but the sticky, insect-trapping leaves are replaced by a smaller succulent rosette for part of the year. The plant can stop growing if the temperature or humidity is too low.
A well-drained, nutrient-poor substrate such as a mixture of peat, sand, perlite and / or vermiculite is recommended.
During the growing phase, the substrate should be kept evenly moist, without waterlogging, with soft, e.g. distilled, water.
Pinguicula calderoniae 'Llano del Conejo' is an excellent choice for terrariums due to its compact size and decorative properties. With a diameter of up to 10 cm, it fits perfectly in smaller terrariums. The flowers are usually violet or bluish in colour and grow on slender stems emerging from the leaf rosette, adding extra visual appeal. This plant contributes to natural pest control in the terrarium by catching and digesting insects. Its easy-care properties make it suitable for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts. Pinguicula calderoniae adapts well to various light and humidity conditions while remaining healthy and robust.
