Description
This Pogostemon from East Asia (Japan, China, Korea) was already used by Takashi Amano in the 1990s under its synonym Eusteralis yatabeana, but entered the hobby in Europe only recently. Here it is still rarely available.
It is easier to cultivate than e.g. Pogostemon stellatus and makes a nice bright green group in the midground or background of an aquascape.
Pogostemon yatabeanus is home to Japan still not very well-known as aquarium plant. It is spreading in the hobby in the USA, however, it is probably not available in Europe.
This large stem plant can be compared to Pogostemon stellatus "Broad Leaf" regarding growth habit and size. Whereas the leaves of the latter attain a bronze hue when kept submersed, P. yatabeanus keeps its beautiful light green tint even under intensive lighting.
Under strong light, with CO2 injection and regular fertilisation, P. yatabeanus can grow very fast. This species is highly suitable for large tanks, where it contrasts beautifully against similar-looking plants with another colour like Pogostemon stellatus "Broad Leaf" and Limnophila aromatica.
