Description
The Korean rock fern is commonly called Polystichum tsus-simense. However, it is also assigned to the species Polystichum luctuosum from southern Africa and Madagascar. The species is mainly found in subtropical East Asia, from northern India via China to Japan and Vietnam. It grows in evergreen humid forests. The dark to medium green, filigree, pinnate, evergreen fronds grow to about 20-40 cm long and are attached to an underground rootstock.
This fern grows in loose, humus-rich soil that is kept slightly moist and must neither dry out nor become waterlogged. When it is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. As a shade plant it does not need much light, but a bright position without direct sun is recommended. Higher humidity above 60 % is favourable. The Tsushima shield fern comes from a subtropical climate with humid summers and cooler, drier winters. Accordingly, a cooler winter dormancy at about 3-15 °C is optimal, during which the fern is kept drier.
Polystichum luctuosum is a graceful subtropical fern that makes an effective accent in smaller terrariums, especially when combined with moss, stones and wood. Although it comes mainly from areas with cool winters, it can also be used for tropical terrariums.
