Description
Prosthechea vitellina, also known as Encyclia vitellina, is a fascinating orchid species that is native to Mexico, the Central American land bridge, Colombia and Ecuador. It is known in Mexico under the name "Manuelitos". This species grows as an epiphyte in oak-pine mountain forests at altitudes of around 1400 to 2600 metres. A tuft of egg-shaped to conical, flattened pseudobulbs, each with two somewhat leathery, narrowly elliptical leaves at the tip, develops on a small rhizome with aerial and adhesive roots. The plant flowers from spring to autumn. The inflorescences, up to 45 cm long, appear at the tip of mature pseudobulbs and bear 4 to 12 striking, orange to deep scarlet-red, wide-open, long-lasting flowers.
Prosthechea vitellina originates from cooler altitudes and is recommended for terrariums that are not too warm and are kept cooler and drier during the winter, which promotes flowering. As a perching plant on branches and trunks, back and side walls, this wild form of orchid offers a magnificent sight during the flowering period.
