Description
The Cretan Brake Fern is native to large parts of tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia, as well as Southern Europe. In nature, it colonizes, for example, shady slopes and rock crevices, often in the splash zone of waterfalls, and rock rubble in forests. It also occurs on damp, shady masonry. There are various cultivars; 'Mayi' owes its special beauty to the light green pinnate leaves, which have silvery-white marked fronds with slightly wavy edges. The bushy leaf rosette reaches about 30 cm in height and 40 cm in width.
For the Cretan Brake Fern, a loose, humus-rich soil is recommended, which should be kept evenly moist and neither dry out nor become waterlogged. Once the fern is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertilizer. As a shade to partial shade plant, it does not need much light, but grows best in bright conditions without direct sunlight if it receives daylight. Higher humidity over 60% is favorable, as well as temperatures between about 16 and 30 °C. The fern can be propagated by dividing the rhizome of older plants.
Pteris cretica 'Mayi' is recommended for tropical and subtropical terrariums, as a ground plant or for moist back walls. With its dense growth form and elegant leaves, the fern not only provides visual appeal but also creates structure and offers hiding spots for smaller terrarium inhabitants.
