Description
This pretty fern is also known under names such as Pteris nipponica, P. cretica 'Parkeri' and P. cretica var. albolineata. It is native to Japan, Korea and Taiwan and is also naturalised in some places in Western Europe and the USA (Florida). Pteris parkeri colonises walls and crevices, among other places. The Silver ribbon fern can grow to a height of around 115 cm, but is usually lower, around 30 cm. The fronds develop on a short creeping rhizome. They have about 3 - 9 narrowly lanceolate leaflets with a broad silvery-white stripe in the centre, hence the English name. The spore-bearing fronds have longer, narrower leaflets and a longer petiole than the sporeless (sterile) leaves.
For Pteris parkeri, we recommend loose, humus-rich soil that is kept evenly moist and must not dry out, but must not become waterlogged either. Once the fern is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. As a shade to semi-shade plant, it does not need much light, but grows best in bright light, but without direct sunlight if it receives daylight. Higher humidity above 60 % is favourable, as are temperatures between around 16 and 30 °C. The fern can be propagated by dividing the rhizome clump of older plants.
As a species from warm temperate to subtropical latitudes, the Silver ribbon fern is suitable for tropical, subtropical and temperate forest terrariums with a cool winter period. With its white striped, elegantly shaped fronds, it is particularly eye-catching in dark terrarium areas. Pteris cretica looks particularly natural on moist backwalls, in crevices in stone structures etc., but can also be used as a ground plant. With its dense, bushy growth, this medium-sized fern provides hiding places for smaller terrarium animals.
