Description
This splendidly flowering, moderately large bromeliad is still widely known as Tillandsia dyeriana, but is now classified as Racinaea. It originates from northwest Ecuador and grows as an epiphyte on trees, even in coastal mangrove forests. It roots in humus accumulations on the trees. The plant forms a slender, upright, about 20-25 cm high funnel with its leaves, with which it collects rainwater in nature. The long stemmed inflorescence, up to 45 cm high, is reminiscent of a Heliconia. It is overhanging and orange-red with small white flowers. After flowering, daughter rosettes, or childels, form at the base of the mother plant.
Racinaea dyeriana belongs to the type of "green Tillandsias" that like a humid environment and are suitable for rainforest terrariums. It absorbs water and nutrients both through the roots and with its leaf funnels via absorbent scales. If it is tied up on objects, it needs a layer of epiphyte soil for its roots, which should be kept moist. Pot culture is also possible. The place should rather be bright, but in daylight culture semi-shaded, protected from midday sun. Optimal temperatures are about 18 to 22 °C. Add soft water to the leaf funnel and substrate; an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser can be added every second watering. The leaf funnel should be emptied and rinsed occasionally.
Racinaea dyeriana is ideal as a perching plant in rainforest terrariums and is a special highlight with its striking inflorescences.
