Description
The Mistletoe or Spaghetti cactus, Rhipsalis baccifera, is the only cactus that is naturally distributed not only in the Americas but also in parts of the Old World: from the southern USA to Argentina, in large parts of Africa as well as in Sri Lanka. It grows as an epiphyte on trees in tropical and subtropical, seasonally dry climates.
The plant traded as "Rhipsalis cassutha" is a form of Rh. baccifera with particularly narrow, fine, drooping shoots. Its overhanging growth is responsible for its dense appearance. R. baccifera forms individual shoots that are particularly long and protrude from the plant like spider legs.
Rhipsalis baccifera is a contrasting plant for large terrariums. It especially enhances darker corners and provides a beautiful background. Due to its hanging growth, it can also find its place in rock walls and higher points. The undemanding plant does not prefer it as warm as many of its relatives. This cactus produces wheel-shaped, white flowers from April to June. These flowers are very small and filigree. With age, R. baccifera can also develop white to pink fruits in a spherical shape.
