Description
The Clumpy mistletoe cactus, Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides, is a unique tropical cactus that differs from other Rhipsalis species mainly due to its dense, filigree branching. This species is native to the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. It occurs on both sides of the Bay of Guanabara as an epiphyte on trees in the Atlantic coastal rainforest. It is widely used as an ornamental plant. The botanical name refers to the similarity of the succulent shoots to some species of Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum). The plant forms a bush of strong main shoots up to 50 cm long, which initially grow upright and later hang over. These branch out strongly and are later densely covered with countless small branches. Under favourable conditions, small white flowers appear.
Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides thrives well in a loose, well-drained substrate that is kept slightly moist but must not become waterlogged. Some temporary drought is tolerated, but especially if this cactus from humid tropical forests is used as a perching plant, it should be watered regularly. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed occasionally with a cactus fertiliser. The light requirement is moderately high; a bright spot is recommended, but not in full midday sun for daylight cultivation. Like other plants from the tropical zone, the coral cactus grows best at higher temperatures above 20 °C. Propagation is by cuttings.
Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides can be used in a variety of ways in medium-sized to large tropical terrariums. Old, multi-branched plants look particularly impressive in an elevated position, for example on branches, back and side walls. However, this cactus is also suitable as a ground plant. The special finely branched structure of the coral cactus contrasts particularly well with large-leaved plants.
