Description
Rotala macrandra 'Variegated' is a selection of the 'normal' large-leaved Rotala macrandra. The parent form is already a colourful plant, but the red colour effect is enhanced in 'Variegated'. The veins stand out from the surrounding darker leaf tissue with a lighter, pink to red colour.
Rotala macrandra is a tropical aquatic plant that is native to flowing waters in southern India. In addition to the long-known large-leaved 'standard form' and the cultivar 'Variegated', various other forms of this variable species are in cultivation. Under water, Rotala macrandra 'Variegated' develops wavy, delicate, elongated, egg-shaped leaves about 2 to 4 cm long on upright stems. The leaves are arranged opposite each other on the stem and are sessile. In the above-water form (emersed), R. macrandra develops smaller, round, green, glossy leaves, similar to Rotala rotundifolia, and spike-like inflorescences with small whitish flowers.
Rotala macrandra is generally considered to be demanding, but if its basic needs are met, it will grow quickly and abundantly. Rather strong lighting, soft to medium-hard water, the addition of CO2 and a balanced supply of macro and micronutrients are important. This tropical plant is quite thermophilic, with optimum temperatures of 24 to 28 °C. Water movement is also beneficial.
It is best to place the stems individually in the substrate with some distance between them as a group. Very dense planting tends to cause the lower leaves to fall off due to lack of light. As with other stem plants, it is propagated by terminal and side shoot cuttings.
Rotala macrandra 'Variegated' is one of the most colourful stem plants in aquascaping. With its bright pink tones and relatively large leaves, it creates an effective accent as a group in the centre to background and provides a strong contrast to light green plants. Like other Rotala macrandra forms, it is also well suited to Dutch-style "plant streets".
