Description
This magnificent, fast-growing stem plant was originally introduced as Rotala sp. "Bangladesh" and then long thought to be a form of Rotala mexicana. However, it turned out that it belongs to Rotala wallichii. That is why we no longer call it R. mexicana "Bangladesh", but R. wallichii "Bangladesh". The 4 - 5 cm wide shoots grow upright and branch moderately. The stem is about 1.5 to 1.8 mm thick and has whorls of about 9 - 11 linear leaves at the stem nodes. The stem nodes are about 6 to 9 mm apart. The leaves, which are about 3 cm long and 1 mm wide, are somewhat broader than the thread-thin leaves of "normal" Rotala wallichii and are lighter in colour. The colouring ranges from light green to light red and is very changeable depending on light intensity and nutrient supply, so the shoots within a stand may differ slightly in colour from one another. This plant also has lower cultivation requirements. Although this Rotala has been known in Europe for over ten years, it is relatively rare in the trade.
Although the Bangladesh Rotala is not too demanding an aquarium plant compared to other fine-leaved Rotala forms, we still recommend plenty of light, the addition of CO2 and a complete supply of macro and micronutrients via the water column. Its rapid growth requires regular shortening of the shoots, which also encourages branching. It is best to plant a number of clusters of a few shoots at a short distance from each other in the substrate. When the shoots have reached a height of around 20 cm or more, you can start to shape the plant by pruning. Propagation is carried out in the same way as with other stem plants, by taking top or side shoot cuttings.
Rotala wallichii ‘Bangladesh’ looks best as a larger plant in the centre to background, especially in larger aquariums with a water level of 40 cm or more. Its upright, lush shoots attract attention with their bright colours and fine-leaved structure.
