Description

The Satin Pothos, Scindapsus pictus, is also mistakenly traded as "Epipremnum pictus" and is one of the most beautiful climbing plants for the room and terrarium. Like the true Epipremnum species, it is a climbing aroid from tropical Asia. It occurs from Bangladesh to Indonesia and the Philippines in tropical rainforests, and in cultivation there are variants with different silvery leaf patterns. The cultivar 'Trebie' has broader silvery zones on a green ground. The leaves have a silky sheen, hence the name Satin Pothos. In nature, Satin Pothos 'Trebie' climbs up tree trunks with adhesive roots, the leaves nestling flat against the support. It also does this to a greater or lesser extent as a terrarium plant in a humid environment, preferably on climbing aids such as moss sticks. The shoots also grow hanging down or creeping on the ground.

Scindapsus pictus grows well in loose, humus-rich soil or in hydroponics. The substrate should be kept moderately moist and should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a fertiliser for houseplants. Although it originates from the tropical rainforest, Satin Pothos tolerates dry air. It does not need much light, but grows best in a bright position without full sun. Temperatures should be at least 20°C and should not fall below 15°C for a long time. In a moist environment the roots attach themselves to the support, otherwise the shoots must be attached where they are to climb. Propagate by head cuttings and partial cuttings; stems lying on the ground will take root at the nodes.

Scindapsus pictus 'Trebie' is a real jungle plant that is easy to keep and best suited for rainforest but also drier terrariums. As a climbing plant, it attracts attention with its shingling, strikingly silvery leaves. It is also decorative as a hanging plant and ground cover.
