Description
Species and varieties of "Peace lily" are among the most popular and undemanding houseplants. Spathiphyllum species come mainly from tropical forests in South America. Spathiphyllum wallisii is a somewhat smaller species, about 30-40 cm tall. Similar hybrids are also available under this name. The simple, medium to dark green leaves grow in rosettes on a many-headed rootstock. New leaf rosettes appear at the base. Under favourable conditions, the Peace lily blooms incessantly. Its elegant inflorescences are typical of aroid plants, with white spathe and a spadix studded with many small inconspicuous flowers.
Spathiphyllum wallisii grows in loose, humusy soil that is kept moderately moist. This should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. The plant also grows well in hydroponics. Although Spathiphyllums partly come from rainforests or at least humid forests, they tolerate dry air. They still grow in very little light, but become stronger in a bright position without full sun. Temperatures are best at at least 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for a long time. When the plant is well rooted, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. Spathiphyllum is propagated by dividing the rootstock or cutting off daughter rosettes.
Spathiphyllum wallisii is an ideal, robust tropical ground plant, both for distinct rainforest terrariums and drier terrarium types.
