Description
The Waffle plant is generally known as Hemigraphis colorata or H. alternata, but has more recently been moved to the genus Strobilanthes. This herbaceous plant from the Acanthus family (Acanthaceae) originates from Malaysia and Indonesia and is now widespread as a tropical ornamental plant. There are various cultivated forms; our plant with hammered leaves is probably the cultivar 'Exotica'. The branched, purple hairy stems grow in an ascending to prostrate manner and take root on contact with the ground. This allows the plant to form a dense carpet. The egg-shaped leaves have a purple coloured blade up to approx. 10 cm long on the underside. Inflorescences with short-lived whitish, trumpet-shaped flowers occasionally appear.
As a plant from the humid tropics, Strobilanthes alternata grows best at higher temperatures of over 20 °C and air that is not too dry, in a loose substrate that is kept moist but must not become waterlogged. The initially upright stems lie on the ground after a certain length and continue to grow by creeping. Propagation takes place by head cuttings.
Strobilanthes alternata can be used as a bushy accent or taller ground cover on the terrarium floor, as well as on moist back walls. In keeping with its origins in Southeast Asia, the plant is well suited to rainforest terrariums. With its dark, reddish tones, the Waffle plant forms a contrast to plants with lighter colours.
