Description
This bushy to creeping plant is generally known as Hemigraphis repanda and erroneously as "Hemigraphis exotica". It has recently been moved to Strobilanthes, like the closely related Waffle plant (S. alternata). Strobilanthes sinuata from the Acanthus family (Acanthaceae) is native to Peninsular Malaysia and is widely used as a tropical ornamental plant. The branched, slender stems grow ascending to prostrate and root on contact with the ground. As a result, the plant grows like a carpet. The linear-lanceolate leaf blades are up to approx. 13 cm long, irregularly sinuate and purple coloured on the underside. Occasionally small white flowers appear.
Strobilanthes sinuata originates from the humid tropics and grows best at higher temperatures of over 20 °C and air that is not too dry, in a loose substrate that is kept moist but must not become waterlogged. The initially upright stems lie on the ground after a certain length and continue to grow by creeping. Propagation takes place by head cuttings.
Strobilanthes sinuata can be used as a bushy accent or taller ground cover on the terrarium floor, as well as on moist back walls. In keeping with its origins in Southeast Asia, the plant is well suited to rainforest terrariums. With its unusual narrow, waved leaves, purple tones and small white flowers, the Dragon's tongue is a striking appearance.
