Description
'Pixie' is an exquisite dwarf form of the Arrowhead plant. The wild type of Syngonium podophyllum is a large climber from the rainforests of Central and South America, and several cultivars with brightly coloured leaves are popular, easy houseplants. Most develop several metre long climbing or hanging shoots with aerial and adhesive roots over time, similar to Philodendron and Monstera. Syngonium podophyllum 'Pixie', however, grows very compact and branched and forms bushes up to around 30 cm wide and high with upright shoots. The leaves have a light-coloured, almost creamy white pattern in the centre.
Although Syngonium podophyllum originates from tropical rainforests, it can cope with relatively dry air. This aroid grows in pretty much any loose substrate that is kept moderately moist but must not become waterlogged. It is also ideal for hydroponics. The dark green wild form grows well in low light or shade, but cultivars with very light-coloured, chlorophyll-poor leaves such as 'Pixie' should be given a brighter spot. S. podophyllum 'Pixie' can be propagated by taking cuttings, which can be stuck directly into the soil.
The Arrowhead plant 'Pixie' is much better suited to small terrariums than other Syngonium varieties. With its bushy growth and brightly coloured leaves, it is an accent plant on the terrarium floor or on damp back walls. Unlike large Syngonium podophyllum cultivars, it is not a true climber, but its upright shoots push their way up between thin branches.
