Description

The Arrowhead plant, Syngonium podophyllum, is a large climbing plant from the rainforests of Central and South America. While the wild type is dark green, there are several varieties with brightly coloured leaves such as 'White Butterfly', which are popular, easy houseplants. Over time, climbing or hanging shoots several metres long develop with aerial and adhesive roots, similar to Philodendron and Monstera. The leaf shape is arrow-shaped in younger plants and divided into pedate shape in older, vigorous plants. Young plants of Syngonium podophyllum 'White Butterfly' supplied by nurseries are initially very compact, with leaf blades only up to around 6 cm long. They are then suitable as a solitary ground plant in the terrarium. However, the shoots become longer, also trailing over the ground, and leaves up to approx. 30 cm long can eventually develop.

Although Syngonium podophyllum originates from tropical rainforests, it can cope with relatively dry air. This aroid thrives in pretty much any loose substrate that is kept moderately moist, but must not become waterlogged. It is also ideal for hydroponics. The dark green wild type grows well in poorly lit, shady places, but cultivars with light-coloured leaf markings and less chlorophyll such as 'White Butterfly' should be given a brighter spot. Propagation is achieved by head and partial cuttings of the shoots, which can be stuck directly into the soil.

The Arrowhead plant 'White Butterfly' is a decorative tropical terrarium plant with its almost creamy white leaf pattern. It can be used in a variety of ways as a ground, climbing or hanging plant, preferably in larger terrariums.
