Description

Tillandsia 'Samantha' is a relatively new cultivar bred by P. Koide-Hyatt by crossing T. mooreana and T. kalmbacheri. It has already won several important awards. The two parent species occur as epiphytes in seasonally dry areas of Mexico. This plant looks unusual for a tillandsia with its very broad, green, soft leaves. At flowering time it forms a very tall, showy, branched inflorescence with red and yellow-green tones.

T. 'Samantha' belongs to the green or rainforest tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey tillandsias. It is also not a typical "air plant" like the grey and also many green tillandsias, because it absorbs water and nutrients not only via absorbent scales on the leaves, but also via the roots. It can be cultivated as a perching plant, but also on coarse substrate such as epiphyte soil in pots and as a ground plant. It prefers regular humidification and thrives best in a light to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. Waterlogging, especially when kept on substrate, but also between the fine rosette leaves is not tolerated. Optimally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form daughter rosettes. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger cluster.

This large, green Tillandsia hybrid can be wonderfully integrated into large rainforest terrariums, where it is a spectacular feature, especially at flowering time.
