Description
Tillandsia 'Showtime' is a hybrid of Tillandsia bulbosa and Tillandsia streptophylla. This rare hybrid can also be found in the wild in Guatemala. The plant bears clear characteristics of both parent plants. It is slightly larger than T. bulbosa and has broader, coiled leaves which are shiny and bear deep channels like T. strepotphylla. The inflorescences, arranged in spikes, form many small, tubular, purple flowers.
T. 'Showtime' belongs to the green or rainforest tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an 'air plant' that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as an adhesive organ. The plant is attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular humidification and thrives best in a light to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry. Ideally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
After blooming, the mother plant begins to form small pups.
These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger tuft.
T. 'Showtime' is a rare and interesting tillandsia. It can grow to a height of about 10 - 20 cm and can be wonderfully integrated into a small or medium-sized rainforest terrarium.
