Description

Tillandsia 'Victoria Red Splendor' is a rather small hybrid of Tillandsia brachycaulos and T. ionantha which combines the most beautiful characteristics of both parent plants. It is more similar to Tillandsia brachycaulos in size and rosette-like growth, but has finer, more slender rosette leaves that grow more upright, similar to Tillandsia ionantha. While both origin plants are native to the Central American region, they prefer different environmental conditions. Like Tillandsia brachycaulos, the hybrid 'Victoria Red Splendor' is one of the green or rainforest Tillandsia species that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. The absorbing trichomes are not quite as prominent as those of the grey Tillandsia 'ionantha', so that a rainforest terrarium can also be used for cultivation. It is fastened on solid materials such as wood or rock. The plant likes a bright place, but without blazing midday sun if it gets daylight. It should be watered regularly with soft water. That can be done by dipping as well as by spraying, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. However, permanent wetness between the leaves is not tolerated. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After the blue-purple flowering, the 'Victoria Red Splendor' begins to form few small pups. These can be carefully detached from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger clump.

Not only on account of its name after Victoria Padilla, former secretary of the International Bromeliad Society, but also because of its splendid red rosette leaves during the flowering period, it is an absolute must-have in every terrarium of Tillandsia lovers.
