Description

Tillandsia ariza-juliae is a small compact plant from the rainforest regions of Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. This species was named in 1959 by L. B. Smith and Jimenez after the Dominican botanist Louis Ariza Julia. The leaves of T. ariza-juliae grow upwards and not wheel-shaped apart like many other Tillandsias. Their base is light green to silvery and the leaves become somewhat darker towards the tip.

Although Tillandsia ariza-juliae is densely covered with silvery scales, it belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey Tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as adhesive roots. The plant can be attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular humidification and grows best in a bright to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry off. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small offspring. These can be separated carefully from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.

Tillandsia ariza-juliae can be used wonderfully in a rainforest terrarium for small highlights. The silvery shimmer of the plant enhances dark spots and creates fantastic accents. When T. ariza-juliae flowers, a short inflorescence whith several flower spikes at the end forms. The flowers start out in a delicate shade of pink that turns red.
