Description
Tillandsia bergeri grows as an epiphyte on trees in southern Brazil (Santa Catarina) and north-eastern Argentina. This area is subtropical with warm, humid summers and cool, drier winters, even with occasional light frosts. The species was described by Carl Christian Mez in 1916 and named after the German botanist Alwin Berger. A synonym is Tillandsia dianthoidea var. grisea. It is a smaller species, but forms quite long, drooping, branched shoots and becomes densely bushy with time. The firm, stiff leaves are of a light green with a silvery sheen.
Although it originates from climates with cool, dry winters, Tillandsia bergeri is counted among the green or rainforest Tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey Tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as adhesive roots. The plant is attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular humidification and grows best in a bright to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry off. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
Over time, side shoots form, especially on shoots that have flowered. These can be cut off for propagation. If they are not separated, a larger bush will gradually develop from many shoots.
This epiphyte from southeastern South America is particularly suitable for temperate rainforest terrariums and subtropical humid forest terrariums with a cool, drier winter period. As the temperature rises, the plant needs more water and higher humidity. If flowering occurs, the narrow inflorescences are usually overhanging and covered with pink-purple flowers. This plant can be tied up particularly well, even in a hanging position, and is especially impressive as a bush of several shoots.
