Description

Tillandsia caerulea is native to Ecuador and Peru at an altitude of about 900 - 2700 metres. It is often found there in arid regions as an epiphyte on trees and other woody plants. It is called caerulea, "sky-blue", because of its light purple to blue, funnel-shaped flowers, which are arranged in spikes. This species forms bushes of many shoots up to about 25 - 40 cm long with thin stems and narrow, grey-green leaves.

Tillandsia caerulea is classified as a "grey Tillandsia". These usually come from drier, more exposed places than the so-called green tillandsias. They often grow higher up in the treetops, in dry forests or even in deserts with a lot of fog. These atmospheric plants absorb water and nutrients from rain, mist and dust completely via the many absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots, if still present, serve as adhesive roots. In culture, such tillandsias are tied or glued to hard materials such as wood or stones. The species prefers a very light, airy place. Man sprüht die Pflanzen ungefähr zwei- bis dreimal pro Woche mit weichem Wasser tropfnass ein. Auch Tauchen ist möglich. Nach dem Wässern soll die Pflanze abtrocknen können. Ideally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
T. caerulea forms many side shoots, especially on shoots that have flowered. These can be cut off for propagation. If they are left, a large bush will develop over time.

This graceful plant is fragrant when in flower, which is extremely rare for a Tillandsia. Its many-shoot silvery grey bushes have a squarrose appearance. Tillandsia caerulea can be wonderfully integrated into a small or medium-sized desert or steppe terrarium.
