Description

Most Tillandsias grow as epiphytes on trees and shrubs, but Tillandsia edithae colonises steep rock faces in the Andes of Bolivia. This species forms quite small star-shaped rosettes at the beginning and with time a longer stem with side shoots. This results in tufts of several shoots over time. The strong, light grey-green leaves are about 6 cm long. Short inflorescences with bright scarlet flowers appear occasionally.

Tillandsia edithae is classified as a "grey Tillandsia". These mostly come from drier places such as dry forests or also deserts rich in fog. These "air plants" absorb water and nutrients completely via the many absorbent scales on the leaves, even from very humid air. The roots, if still present, serve as adhesive roots. In culture, such Tillandsias are tied or glued to solid materials such as wood or stones. The light requirement is high. The air must not be very humid and stagnant all the time, because the plants need to be able to dry off. Therefore "Grey Tillandsias" are not well suited for rainforest terrariums, or they need a drier, well ventilated place in them. One sprays Tillandsia edithae with soft water two to three times a week. Dipping is also possible. An orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering. Propagation is done by cutting off plantlets or side branches.

Tillandsia edithae is a particularly attractive air plant with its branching stems, strong, broad leaves, light grey-green colour and contrasting bright red flowers. The young plants are rather broadly star-shaped, while older plants hang down. It can be attached to rocks or wood in a bright spot. In keeping with its origins, it is particularly suited to designs inspired by rocky mountain slopes.
