Description

Tillandsia flabellata is a species native to the tropics from Mexico to Nicaragua that occurs as an epiphyte on trees. and was first described and named by John Gilbert Baker in 1887. It is one of the larger and one of the most popular Tillandsia species. This may also be due to the fact that T. flabellata produces inflorescences with several branches, in a beautiful shade of red. It forms an elegant leaf rosette that may reach a height of about 25 - 30 cm. The rather smooth, green leaves show reddish to bronze tones.

T. flabellata belongs to the green and rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. It is not a typical "air plant" as the grey and also many green Tillandsias because it takes up water and nutrients not only via its absorbent scales on the leaves but also via its roots. It can be cultivated as perching plant but also as potted and bottom plant on loose substrate such as epiphyte soil. It prefers regular humidification and thrive best in a light to semi-shaded place, without direct sunlight if it gets daylight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. Waterlogging, especially when kept on substrate, but also between the fine rosette leaves is not tolerated. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small pups. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger clump.

T. flabellata is a rather large plant with widely fanned leaves that is a real eye-catcher, especially when flowering. It can easily be cultivated as an epiphyte, but also in a loose substrate directly at the bottom of a tropical or rainforest terrarium.
