Description

'Dark Leaf Spirit' is a selection of Tillandsia flabellata, a species native to the tropics of Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador that occurs as an epiphyte on trees. This variant of T. flabellata is distinguished by its dark green leaves with a tinge of reddish. Its flower is also a darker shade of red. T. flabellata, first described and named by John Gilbert Baker in 1887, is one of the larger and more popular of the Tillandsias. This may also be due to the fact that T. flabellata produces inflorescences with several branches in a beautiful shade of red. It forms an elegant rosette of leaves that can grow to about 25 - 30 cm high.

T. flabellata 'Dark Leaf Spirit' belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey Tillandsias. It is also not a typical "air plant" like the grey and also many green Tillandsias, because it absorbs water and nutrients not only via absorbent scales on the leaves, but also via the roots. It can be cultivated as an epiphyte, in pots and as a ground plant in a coarse substrate such as epiphyte soil. It prefers regular humidification and grows best in a bright to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. Waterlogging is not tolerated. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small offsprings. These can be separated carefully from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.

Tillandsia flabellata 'Dark Leaf Spirit' is a rather large plant with widely fanned leaves that is a real eye-catcher in a rainforest terrarium, especially when flowering. It can be grown easily as a perching plant, but also on the bottom.
