Description

'Vivipara' is a form of Tillandsia flexuosa that is widely distributed, growing in Florida, Central America, the Caribbean Islands and northern South America as an epiphyte on trees. T. flexuosa is one of the oldest known species and was described and named by Olof Schwartz in 1788. It has also been given many different synonyms over the years, including Tillandsia aloifolia, T. patens, Vriesea aloifolia, Vriesea tenuifolia and Platystachys patens.
'Vivipara' means viviparous, indicating that the plant forms adventitious plantlets on the inflorescences. Its leaves curl in unevenly as it grows, giving the plant its striking shape. It is a large Tillandsia with about 20 - 40 cm tall leaf rosettes. The plant is easy to care for and copes well with short-term drought and cold.

Tillandsia flexuosa 'Vivipara' belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey Tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as adhesive roots. The plant can be attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular humidification and grows best in a bright to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry off. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small offspring. These can be separated carefully from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump. In addition, T. flexuosa 'Vivipara' forms daughter rosettes (adventitious plantlets) along its inflorescence, which can be separated as soon as they appear vigorous enough.

T. flexuosa 'Vivipara' grows very large and is therefore an absolute highlight, especially in large rainforest terrariums. It forms long curved leaves and the flower spike also becomes very long as the plant ages. The flower itself has a deep red hue.
