Description
Tillandsia ionantha 'Druid' is a very distinctive selection of the species T. ionantha. The latter species is distributed from Mexico to Panama, preferably at altitudes up to 1800 metres, mostly as an epiphyte on trees in various dry to moderately humid habitats. It forms a compact, small rosette of narrow, grey-green leaves.
While other T. ionantha forms develop red-toned upper leaves in strong light at flowering time, 'Druid' retains its light green leaves, which then also show light yellow tones. The tubular flowers are strikingly white, not blue-violet as is otherwise typical for the species. The plant originates from a collection by Drew Schulz (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) around 1970 in the surroundings of Veracruz (Mexico), who also gave it the cultivar name 'Druid'.
Tillandsia ionantha var. ionantha 'Druid' belongs to the "grey" Tillandsias, also called "desert" or dry Tillandsias, and prefers a very light, airy place in the terrarium without permanent humidity.
These "air plants" absorb nutrients and water from the atmosphere exclusively with the help of many small suction scales on their leaves. The roots serve as adhesive roots. The plant can be attached to solid materials like wood or stone.
Spray the Tillandsie two to three times a week with soft water or immerse it. In between, it should be allowed to dry off.
Optimally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
Like almost all tillandsias, T. ionantha 'Druid' also forms several children at its base after flowering.
These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.
T. ionantha var. ionantha 'Druid' can also find a place in smaller terrariums thanks to its height of only about 5 - 8 cm. With its unique appearance, it is both an eye-catcher and an accent to other plants. In combination with other Tillandsia ionantha forms it stands out with its white flowers.
