Description
Tillandsia kolbii is native to Mexico, mainly Oaxaca and Chiapas, and also Guatemala. T. kolbii is very similar to T. ionantha but slightly larger growing with softer, often curved leaves and a longer flowering shoot.
T. kolbii belongs to the green or rainforest tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as an adhesive organ. The plant is attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular humidification and thrives best in a bright to semi-shady area, in daylight culture without direct midday sun. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry off. Ideally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
Like almost all tillandsias, T. Kolbii also forms several pups at its base after blooming. These can be carefully separated from the mother plant when they reach a size of about one third. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger tuft.
This small tillandsia can be wonderfully integrated into smaller rainforest terrariums, as it does not grow larger than 7 to 10 cm.
