Description
Tillandsia neglecta is a very beautiful species of tillandsia from south-eastern Brazil that stays small. It grows as a lithophyte on granite rocks in Cabo Frio in the state of Rio de Janeiro, up to 300 m above sea level. The plant forms short stems that are densely covered with leathery, thick, 4 - 7 cm long leaves. Over time, a cushion of many shoots develops. During the flowering period, a spike appears with red bracts and a number of blue flowers.
This species is a tropical rainforest Tillandsia that is adapted to more humid climate than the "Grey" Tillandsias. It prefers higher humidity of at least 60 %, with good ventilation, and should be protected against blazing midday sun in daylight cultivation. The plant takes up water and nutrients by absorbent scales while its roots work as adhesive roots. The plant is fastened to solid materials such as wood or rock. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by spraying with soft water. Permanent wetness between the leaves is not tolerated, the plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer. After the delicate, blue blossom, the mother plant begins to form small pups. These can be carefully detached when they are about a third of the size of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a clump of several shoots.
This small, stem-forming tillandsia can be integrated very well into small to medium-sized rainforest terrariums. Although it grows on rocks in nature, as an "air plant" it is independent of the substrate and can also be cultivated as an epiphyte on branches.
