Description
Tillandsia reichenbachii grows as an epiphyte in southern Bolivia to northern Argentina, in areas with a subtropical climate at about 200 - 2000 m altitude. The grey-green leaves are on a short stem. They are up to about 14 cm long, slightly twisted and give the plant a bizarre appearance. During the flowering period, a long-stalked inflorescence appears with a number of quite broad, pink and white coloured, fragrant flowers.
Tillandsia reichenbachii is classified as a "grey Tillandsia". These usually come from drier, more exposed places than the so-called green tillandsias. They often grow higher up in the treetops, in dry forests or even in deserts with a lot of fog. These atmospheric plants absorb water and nutrients from rain, mist and dust completely via the many absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots, if still present, serve as adhesive roots. In culture, such Tillandsias are tied or glued to hard materials such as wood or stones. The species prefers a very light, airy place. Man sprüht die Pflanzen ungefähr zwei- bis dreimal pro Woche mit weichem Wasser tropfnass ein. Auch Tauchen ist möglich. Nach dem Wässern soll die Pflanze abtrocknen können. Optimally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
As with almost all Tillandsia species, T. reichenbachii also forms several pups at its base after bloom. These can be carefully separated when they reach a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.
Tillandsia reichenbachii is suitable as an epiphyte in medium-sized subtropical forest terrariums. It looks decorative with its rather long inflorescences with a cluster of light pink flowers.
