Description

Tillandsia tricolor is one of the green Tillandsia species and was already described in 1831 by the German botanist Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal and the French nature researcher Ludolf Karl Adelbert von Chamisso. It originates from the low mountains of Guatemala (800 - 2.300 metres above sea level). T. tricolor "Melanocrater" is a form that was originally considered a species of its own (Tillandsia melanocrater). Its very hard, narrow, pointed leaves are arranged upright in a rosette. They have a broadened, dark base and a brown-red upper part. The plant gets about 15 cm wide and 30 cm, occasionally also up to 60 cm tall.

Tillandsia tricolor "Melanocrater" belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. It is fastened on solid materials such as wood or rock. The plant likes a bright place, but without blazing midday sun if it gets daylight. It should be watered regularly with soft water. That can be done by dipping as well as by spraying, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. However, permanent wetness between the bases of the leaves is not tolerated. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer. After the large, tricoloured flowering that gave it its name, Tillandsia tricolor 'Melanocrater' begins to form few small pups. These can be carefully detached from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger clump.

"Melanocrater" is a very robust species whose flowering lasts for a long time, which makes it attractive both in its small growth forms as an eye-catcher in rainforest terrariums but also as a solitary plant in its large growth form with up to 60 cm.
