Description
The Flowering inch plant 'Nanouk' is an easy ground cover and hanging plant with strikingly marked and coloured foliage. It is erroneously assigned to Tradescantia albiflora and T. zebrina in the trade, but belongs to T. cerinthoides, also known under the synonym T. blossfeldiana. The species T. cerinthoides is native to south-eastern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, in sunny grasslands, in rock crevices, but also in shady places. The species is rich in forms, and there are several variegated cultivars. Tradescantia cerinthoides 'Nanouk' has somewhat succulent, elliptical leaves on a rather thick stem. It creeps over the ground and forms roots at the nodes, or the shoots grow hanging down.
This tradescantia grows in loose soil that is kept slightly moist. It tolerates temporary drought but will inevitably rot if waterlogged. Hydroponics is also possible. When the plant is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser. Constantly very humid, stagnant air is unfavourable, while dry air is well tolerated. A bright but not full sunny spot is best. 18 - 20 °C is optimal, but temperatures can be higher. A drier overwintering at about 12 - 15 °C is possible. For propagation, put head cuttings in the ground or root them in water.
Tradescantia cerinthoides 'Nanouk' with its white, green and pink striped leaves makes a striking colour accent in terrariums, as a ground cover or also a hanging plant e.g. on back walls. It is suitable for not too humid rainforest terrariums, but better for drier terrarium types, even subtropical ones with cooler winters.
