Description
The Purple Queen flower is a very robust, easy to keep plant. It comes from dry, sunny locations in eastern Mexico. Tradescantia pallida, also known as Setcreasea purpurea, grows up to about 40 cm tall, its shoots grow upright to spread out, the older parts lay down on the ground and root at the nodes. This causes the plant to spread. The fleshy, lanceolate leaves are about 7 - 15 cm long. Pink flowers appear at the tips of the shoots. There are different varieties; our plant with dark purple leaves is possibly the cultivar 'Purpurea'.
This tradescantia grows in almost any soil. Water when the soil surface becomes dry. Temporary dry periods are tolerated, but not waterlogging, which leads to rot. Hydroponics is also possible. A bright spot is favourable, which can be semi-shady to sunny for daylight cultivation. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. Constantly humid, stagnant air is unfavourable, while dry air is well tolerated. The plant is temperature tolerant, but stops growing below 8 - 10 °C and does not tolerate frost. To propagate, stick head cuttings in the ground or root them in water.
Tradescantia pallida is particularly suitable as a ground plant for terrariums oriented towards tropical dry forests and savannas. It provides a strong colour accent and is particularly suitable as a taller ground cover in large terrariums. Its shoots hang down from raised planting places such as back walls.
