Description
The Silver inch plant is a magnificent herbaceous plant from the undergrowth of tropical forests. It is widespread from Mexico to Colombia in areas with alternating rainy and dry seasons. Tradescantia zebrina is a popular tropical ornamental plant worldwide, formerly also known as Zebrina pendula. This Tradescantia forms long creeping, branched shoots with ascending shoot tips and 4 to 10 cm long, egg-shaped, slightly succulent leaves. These have two broad, conspicuous silvery longitudinal stripes on a dark green background. There are various cultivars of T. zebrina in cultivation, which differ in the basic colouring and the width of the stripes. When the stems lie on moist soil, they root at the nodes. The shoots can form a dense, extensive carpet on the ground. From an elevated growing position, they hang down for at least 50 cm, which is why this plant is popular as a hanging basket plant. Under favourable growing conditions, a few pink to purple-coloured small flowers appear one after the other between two bracts.
Tradescantia zebrina grows best in loose, nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil, e.g. standard potting compost. Temporary drought can lead to slight wilting, but is usually well tolerated. However, waterlogged soil leads to rotting and should be avoided. It still grows in low light or in the shade, but is best in a bright position, but not in full sun if it receives daylight.Temperatures above 20 °C are recommended. As with other Tradescantia species, it is easy to propagate using cuttings with at least 4 leaves, which are inserted a few centimetres deep into the soil. They quickly form roots at the stem nodes. Shoots can also be rooted in water. Drooping shoots senesce over time and eventually die. These are then removed and replaced with new cuttings.
The Silver inch plant can be used in tropical terrariums as a versatile ground cover or as a hanging plant on side and back walls. With its rapid growth, it is a plant for the impatient. A broad carpet of Tradescantia zebrina looks splendid in larger terrariums, but individual shoots of this strikingly silvery plant also make a pretty accent. This Tradescantia does not need very humid air and is suitable for both rainforest and moderately humid tropical terrariums.
