Description

Utricularia calycifida, the peach-flowered bladderwort, originates from northern South America, specifically from Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname. This carnivorous plant belongs to the genus of bladderworts, known for their unique trapping mechanism. Utricularia calycifida is a terrestrial plant that naturally inhabits moist, acidic, and nutrient-poor environments like wet sands in the savanna. In cultivation, the plant grows well in moist substrate and prefers moderate to intense light, but can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. The ideal temperatures for growth range between 15 and 30 °C, and the plant requires high humidity, which should be regularly maintained by misting with softened water.

This plant is excellent for small terrariums or bottle gardens, where it can quickly cover the entire substrate without crowding out other plants. Utricularia calycifida reaches a height of about 15 cm and produces relatively large, 3 - 6 cm long leaves with purple veins. Its fascinating trapping mechanism consists of small bladder traps that can capture and digest small aquatic organisms such as insects and protozoa. The plant blooms year-round with numerous delicate flowers and does not require a dormancy period. As a non-toxic plant, it is also suitable for terrariums with animals and can be cultivated in a special micro terrarium propagation container from Aqua Art, which is easy to clean and maintain.
