Description
Utricularia longifolia, a large bladderwort species, is endemic to eastern Brazil and grows in areas with a seasonally dry tropical climate. It inhabits permanently moist locations as a terrestrial plant or lithophyte (on rocks). This carnivorous plant prefers an acidic, nutrient-poor substrate like peat in cultivation, which should be kept constantly moist to wet. Temperatures should always remain above 10 °C to ensure optimal growth.
In a terrarium, long-leaved bladderwort can serve as a highlight, producing striking violet flowers up to 6 cm wide. The plant's lanceolate leaves can reach a length of about 12 cm, and its long creeping stems quickly cover larger areas. The plant can also stand in 1 to 4 cm deep water, with fluctuating water levels promoting flower formation. The plant requires no dormancy, thus enlivening the terrarium with its interesting foliage and magnificent flowers all year round.
