When supplied as a potted plant and/or bunch, it is very important that it is not planted in direct company of invertebrates. The plant should be watered for at least a week - with regular water changes - before introducing it into your aquarium. The plant nurseries commonly use raw material from Asia for these variants. When planted into an existing ecosystem, it is possible that invertebrates could be harmed. There should be no issues with a new set-up - but regular water changes are advised as well.

Description
The Australian dwarf Vallisneria is a high-contrast plant with its very narrow leaves. It is the most popular Vallisneria species in aquascaping.
This plant was originally introduced from Australia under the name Vallisneria gracilis, which was later regarded as a synonym of Vallisneria nana. After it then became generally known in the hobby and trade as V. nana, V. gracilis was recognized as a separate species again in 2008. True Vallisneria nana is a variable species, which generally develops longer and broader, often reddish-colored leaves compared to V. gracilis. Both species are native to the northern tropical regions of Australia.
Although the dwarf Vallisneria is not a difficult plant, it should be given an open, bright spot. A good supply of nutrients and CO2 is very beneficial for its growth. Like other Vallisnerias, it reproduces profusely by runners once it has established itself.
Vallisneria gracilis is particularly recommended for midground to background planting. With its fine foliage, it goes well with minimalist layouts dominated by grassy ground cover plants such as Eleocharis species.
Vallisneria gracilis is a relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby and comes from North Australia. In the habitat it only reaches heights of around 15 cm. In aquariums it can grow to a height of around 70 - 80 cm. For many years, the name Vallisneria gracilis was regarded as a synonym of Vallisneria nana, and the aquarium plant is still widely known by the latter name. However, more recent investigations have shown that Vallisneria gracilis should be distinguished as a separate species from V. nana. True Vallisneria nana, also an Australian species, is a very variable, larger plant with broader leaves and is more similar to Vallisneria spiralis.
Its light green ribbon-shaped rosulate leaves growing make V. nana a great contrast plant for the middle- as well as for the background of a tank. Once established, V. gracilis forms many runners. (read more)
