Description

Wallisia cyanea is still widely known as Tillandsia cyanea, the Blue Tillandsia. There are several varieties of this particularly pretty bromeliad. The selection 'Bianca' flowers white, in contrast to the wild form with pink spike-like inflorescences and blue flowers. The names 'Bianchi', 'Bianchini' and var. alba probably mean the same plant.
The wild form of Wallisia cyanea colonises tropical mountain forests in Ecuador and Peru at about 600 to 1.000 metres above sea level. This epiphyte roots in humus accumulations on tree trunks and branches. The plant forms an approximately 40 - 50 cm wide stemless rosette of narrow, dark grey-green leaves. The plant is called "Pink quill" after its distinctive inflorescences.

Wallisia cyanea belongs to the type of "green Tillandsias" that like a humid environment and are suitable for rainforest terrariums. It absorbs water and nutrients both through the roots and through its few absorbent scales on the leaves. Wallisia cyanea needs a layer of epiphyte soil for its roots, which should not dry out completely. Pot culture is also possible. The place should rather be bright, but for daylight cultivation semi-shady, protected from midday sun. Spraying with soft water about two to three times a week is recommended; an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering.

Wallisia cyanea 'Bianca' is already attractive in rainforest terrariums because of its elegant, arching foliage. When its extraordinary white inflorescences appear, it is particularly eye-catching. This bromeliad needs quite a bit of space and works well as a solitary or smaller group, not only on epiphyte branches and stems, but also on back walls or stone structures.
