Description
The Zanzibar gem is a large, vigorous, robust plant whose leaves shine like jewels. This unusual aroid comes from forests and savannahs in East Africa, where there are prolonged dry periods. Zamioculcas zamiifolia is adjusted to shade as well as drought and warmth, ideal conditions for an indoor plant. Its leathery, thick-stemmed, glossy, pinnate leaves are about 40-70 cm long and are attached to a large succulent rootstock. They resemble the fronds of some fern palms of the genus Zamia, hence the name.
The "Zz plant", as the Zanzibar gem is also called, is considered the hardiest houseplant in the world. It grows in any loose soil that is kept moderately moist and can become a little dry temporarily. The plant is only sensitive to waterlogging; rhizome and roots will then rot. It does not need much light, but grows better in a bright position; sun or strong lighting is tolerated. The plant is very temperature-tolerant; 18 - 26 °C is ideal, and 15 °C should not be fallen short of for a longer period of time. When the Zanzibar gem is well established, it can be fed with a houseplant fertiliser.
Zamioculcas zamiifolia is best suited for large terrariums that are oriented towards tropical dry forests and savannas. But also on the floor of smaller terrariums, young plants of the lucky feather make a pretty accent.
