Description

We received this beautiful, interesting Bucephalandra under the label "Theia Red". As well as all Bucephalandras, it originates from Borneo island, growing as a rheophyte (adapted to strong current) on rock along rainforest streams. The exact locality and species identity are unknown to us. We propagate this plant in our aquaria for more than one year.

Typical for this form are more or less horizontally arranged, quite large and wide, rather soft leaves, sitting on a creeping, moderately branched rhizome. It differs by this horizontal growth habit from other larger Bucephalandras that develop rather upright, rigid rhizomes under water. Submerged leaves show dark brown-red colours with slightly blueish hue. After our experience, this Bucephalandra is well adapted to aquarium culture, growing not too slowly.

Bucephalandra sp. "Theia Red" is primarily an epiphyte on rock or wood. It can also be fixed to the bottom, however the rhizome must not be buried to avoid rotting. The plant looks best when grown with medium lighting, good water current and constand nutrient and CO2 supply. It is easily propagated by cutting terminal and side shoots.

With its relatively large leaves, Bucephalandra sp. "Theia Red" looks best on or at the base of hardscape in the aquarium midground. With its horizontal growth habit, it fits well into an aquascape, together with slowly growing mosses and ferns, and looks especially beautiful as a larger stand.
